This three-session workshop invites you to explore the self-portrait as a form of visual poetry.
Beginning with a photographic portrait, you will gradually transform your image through mixed media—using paint, collage, stitching, drawing, and other materials. The photograph becomes a starting point rather than a final result: something to alter, layer, interrupt, or reimagine. The process is guided by curiosity, experimentation, and play. The result is a personal and evolving interpretation—one that may reveal unexpected ways of seeing yourself.

What to Expect
A guided self-portrait photography session;
Printed portraits to work from (multiple copies provided);
Exploration of mixed media techniques in an open, flexible way;
Space to experiment freely—there's no “get it right”;
Time to reflect, select, and share your work.
Looking at a photograph of yourself can sometimes feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. This workshop offers a different approach: to engage with that image creatively—shifting it, obscuring it, or expanding it into something new.

Session 1 — The Portrait
Participants are guided on a self-portrait.
Session 2 — Exploration
Working with printed portraits, participants begin experimenting with materials and interventions.
Session 3 — Development & Reflection
Continue developing the work, then reflect, select, and share final pieces.

Who It’s For
This workshop is open to anyone—no previous experience is needed. It’s for those who are curious about: 
exploring their creativity,
working with images in new ways,
experimenting without rigid rules
All materials are provided, including prints of your portrait. You are welcome to bring personal images, papers, or fragments you may want to include in your work.

Workshop facilitator - Silmara Emde

Silmara is a dynamic artist and educator whose creative practice centers on paper, mixed media, portraiture and storytelling through visual arts. With a deep interest in experimenting with materials, her work celebrates curiosity, presence, and the unique perspective each person brings to the creative process.

With a background in graphic design and photography, she believes creativity is a lifestyle, a way of moving through the world. She encourages artists of all levels to trust their intuition, embrace experimentation, and find joy in the creative journey.

When not in the studio, Silmara can be found learning new skills, drawing with her son, dancing and savouring life in any way inspiration calls.
